Lead and supervise all plant operations during the assigned shift.

Ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the facility in compliance with HSE policies and operating procedures.

Optimize plant performance, availability, and reliability while meeting production targets.

Coordinate operational and maintenance activities to ensure safe and effective execution of work.

Make timely operational decisions and respond effectively to abnormal and emergency situations.

Manage and develop shift personnel by providing leadership, guidance, and technical support.

Ensure accurate and comprehensive shift handovers, including the communication of plant status, ongoing work, operational risks, and outstanding actions to the incoming shift.

Ensure compliance with statutory, environmental, and company requirements while achieving the objectives of the Operations Department.

Description

Safety at Work

Has overall responsibility for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the plant during the assigned shift.

Demonstrates leadership in Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) by promoting safety as a core value and ensuring compliance with all HSE policies, procedures, and statutory requirements.

Ensures plant operations are conducted in accordance with approved operating procedures, safety rules, and operational limits.

Leads the shift team in responding effectively to normal, abnormal, and emergency operating conditions, including plant trips, blackouts, and black-start activities where applicable.

Coordinates operational and maintenance activities to ensure work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with the Permit-to-Work (PTW) system.

Reviews, authorizes, and ensures proper equipment isolations, lockout/tagout requirements, and safety precautions before issuing or accepting permits for maintenance activities.

Ensures operational targets and contractual performance requirements are achieved while maintaining plant availability, reliability, and efficiency.

Conducts regular plant inspections and safety observations to identify hazards, verify equipment condition, and ensure compliance with operational standards.

Ensures timely reporting, investigation, and follow-up of safety incidents, near misses, equipment failures, and operational abnormalities, including implementation of corrective and preventive actions.

Maintains accurate operational records, shift logs, and reports, ensuring effective communication during shift handovers and with plant management.

Adheres to the Crisis Management Plan and leads the shift team in implementing emergency response procedures when required.

Maintains the confidentiality of operational, technical, and commercial information related to the facility.

Team Leadership

Leads the Operations Team to achieve a high level of performance, efficiency, and operational excellence.

Builds and sustains a committed, cohesive, and high-performing team through effective leadership and collaboration.

Acts as a mentor and coach, providing guidance and technical support to team members.

Leads by example by demonstrating professionalism, accountability, and adherence to company values and standards.

Identifies and recommends appropriate training and development programs to enhance the competency of the Operations Team.

Plans, prepares, and delivers operations-related training, coaching, and knowledge-sharing sessions to support continuous improvement and workforce development.

PROBLEM SOLVING:

The Shift-in-Charge Engineer is responsible for resolving technical and operational problems through a thorough understanding of plant processes and systems.

Utilizes control system data, historical trends, operational experience, and engineering principles to troubleshoot equipment and process abnormalities.

Conducts or facilitates Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) to identify the underlying causes of incidents and equipment failures and implements appropriate corrective and preventive actions.

Ensures that lessons learned, findings, and recommended actions are effectively communicated to shift personnel and other operating teams to prevent recurrence and promote continuous improvement.

JOB CONTEXT:

The Shift-in-Charge Engineer is responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

Works at Manah Power Plant from the Central Control Room under the supervision of the Operations Superintendent and conducts regular plant rounds as required to effectively perform assigned duties.

Leads and supervises shift personnel to ensure the plant is operated safely, efficiently, and within all environmental, technical, and contractual requirements.

Ensures comprehensive and accurate shift handovers by communicating plant status, ongoing activities, operational risks, and outstanding actions to the incoming shift.

Prepares, reviews, and submits all required operational reports, including but not limited to:

o Spot Market Reports

o Daily Operating Readings Reports

o Night Log and Shift Summary Reports

o Trip and Outage Incident Reports

and distributes them to the relevant stakeholders in a timely manner.

Maintains effective decision-making and leadership during technical, operational, and personnel-related challenges, ensuring safe and stable plant operation under pressure.

Coordinates with the Load Dispatch Centre (LDC) for plant start-ups, shutdowns, load changes, and planned or forced outages in accordance with grid and contractual requirements.

Supports cross-functional training and development across different operational areas as required by Management, enhancing workforce flexibility and effective utilization of resources.

Performs any other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Line Manager that are consistent with the role, whether or not specifically stated in this job description.
