Position Title: Design Lead (Primary) – Substation (Electrical)

Direct Reports: Design Engineers, Draughtspersons
Qualification: B.E. / B.Tech in Electrical or Electrical & Electronics Engineering
Experience: 7–10 years (with strong experience in Primary Design Engineering)
Role Objective:
The Design Lead (Primary) is responsible for reviewing and executing primary engineering activities for AIS/GIS substation projects across multiple geographic regions. The role requires strong expertise in substation layout engineering, coordination for BIM 3D model development, multi-disciplinary interfacing (Electrical, Civil, Structural, MEP), and supporting engineering phases from pre-bid through commissioning and warranty. The Design Lead will manage and guide a team to deliver engineering outputs on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
• Deliver engineering drawings and documents in alignment with project schedules.
• Review primary engineering drawings and design calculations; secure client approvals.
• Review and validate vendor submissions related to primary engineering.
• Estimate and plan engineering man-hours; review BOQs and support clarifications.
• Coordinate across disciplines to ensure inter-departmental technical alignment.
• Provide technical support to site execution teams throughout project phases.
• Support vendor evaluation and equipment inspection as per technical specifications.
• Gather project input details from clients, engineering managers, and vendors.
• Review and finalize equipment layouts, cable routing, cable tray, earthing, lighting, and lightning protection layouts.
• Support secondary engineering teams where required.
• Submit resource requirements and manage engineering workloads effectively.
Technical Expertise Required:
• Strong knowledge of substation layouts and primary equipment configurations.
• Proficiency in primary system engineering including SLDs, earthing, cable routing, and protection layouts.
• Capability to perform engineering calculations (busbar sizing, UPS/DG/LT transformer sizing, earthing conductor sizing, short circuit forces, sag–tension, CCC, etc.).
• Understanding of national and international standards and codes.
• Awareness of interdisciplinary interfaces (Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Instrumentation).
