Job Details

The Livestock Husbandry Officer is responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring, and improving livestock production systems with a focus on animal nutrition, fodder production, herd health management, milk production, meat production, animal welfare, and farm productivity. The position supports the development of sustainable and climate-resilient livestock systems in Oman while ensuring compliance with national veterinary, food safety, and biosecurity regulations. The position ensures data collection and reporting by maintaining livestock production databases and farm records, analyzing production, health, and economic performance indicators, preparing technical reports, progress reports, and recommendations, supporting livestock sector assessments and feasibility studies and contributing to national livestock development initiatives and projects.

ENGAGEMENT

  • Coordinate stakeholder engagement with government agencies, private-sector actors, financial institutions, and development partners to ensure coordinated delivery and alignment with national priorities.
  • Foster coherent collaboration across program staff and stakeholders to ensure complementarity, transparency, and efficient joint implementation.
  • Promote a team culture aligned with GGGI s values of Trust, Transparency, Respect, and Partnership.
  • Report directly to the Chief of Party on livestock husbandry-related activities and coordination with other workstreams.
  • Represent the program in meetings, workshops, and calls as delegated, ensuring effective follow-up and timely documentation.

DELIVERY

  • Livestock Production Management: Provide technical support for cattle, camel, and small ruminant production systems; monitor herd performance indicators (growth, mortality, reproduction, milk yield, and meat efficiency); and assist stakeholders in adopting improved breeds and production technologies.
  • Feed, Nutrition, and Fodder Management: Formulate balanced, cost-effective rations and introduce alternative, climate-smart feed resources and conservation techniques (silage and hay) suited for arid environments. Assess fodder availability to develop sustainable production plans including Rhodes grass, Alfalfa, Sorghum, Maize silage, and hydroponics that reduce reliance on imported feed while optimizing water management.
  • Animal Health, Biosecurity and Dairy/Meat Development: Partner with veterinary teams to implement disease prevention, vaccination, and biosecurity protocols while ensuring compliance with Omani notifiable disease reporting and antimicrobial stewardship. Monitor dairy/meat performance to improve milk hygiene, mastitis control, fattening programs, and carcass quality.
  • Capacity Building and Extension Services: Deliver targeted training manuals, guidelines, and climate-smart livestock extension programs for farmers, cooperatives, and local personnel, with a specific focus on mainstreaming women and youth participation across livestock value chains.

Desired Candidate Profile

  • Bachelor's degree in: Animal Science, Animal Production, Livestock Production, Veterinary Science, Agricultural Science (Livestock Specialization)
  • Preferred: Master's degree in animal nutrition, ruminant production, dairy science, veterinary public health, or related field.
  • 6-8 years of relevant experience in livestock production, husbandry, and farm management
  • Proven practical experience in dairy and/or meat production systems, feed formulation, and fodder production under arid or semi-arid environments.
  • Familiarity of animal health management and biosecurity practices, and smallholder/commercial livestock operations
  • Experience in arid and semi-arid environments.
  • Experience in GCC countries, particularly Oman.
  • Experience in donor-funded agricultural development projects.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required. Knowledge of Arabic is an asset.
