    Background

    Oman has seen progress around key child health and development indicators such as child and maternal mortality, stunting, child immunization and primary education. However, progress has reached a plateau and analysis shows that despite Oman having in place adequate infrastructure, systems and resources in these sectors, there is insufficient demand from the population. For example, one in two children with diarrhoea or acute respiratory infections are not being taken to see a health professional. In addition, levels of stunting have increased to 14% from 10% eight years ago. It can be assumed that infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices require attention.

    Violence against children is common practice across the region. Research has shown that whilst girls experience a higher prevalence of emotional abuse and neglect and sexual abuse, boys are at greater risk of severed physical punishment. Children with disabilities experience even further vulnerability and maltreatment. This type of behavior is common place and socially acceptable in the home and at school.

    Magenta is supporting the Government of Oman (GoO) and UNICEF in the development of a Social Behavioural Change Communications (SBCC) program in Oman which aims to achieve enhanced outcomes in the following focus areas:

    ·       Child malnutrition and Integrated Early Childhood Development;

    ·       Child maltreatment; and

    ·       Inclusion of children with disabilities.
